If you thought slot canyons were amazing in summer, you should see them in winter. There’s just something so magical about red rock + snow. Southern Utah’s slot canyons will completely transport you to another world any time of year, with twisting sandstone walls of vibrant reds and oranges that will leave you in awe. Yet in winter, the silence and beauty of it all will have you feeling like time has completely stopped. There’s nothing quite like canyoneering in winter.

At East Zion Adventures, we book tours and activities year round, weather permitting. Browse all of our canyoneering tour options, from half days to full days, and click here for tips on preparing for your canyoneering adventure.

The unique thing about East Zion Adventures is that we are located on property at Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort, which is made up of 4,000 acres of beautiful land bordering Zion National Park. This means that we are able to offer many activities and views that other guide companies cannot; horseback riding with scenic views of Zion is just one of them!

Exploring in and around Zion National Park

winter hiking in zion

Zion Ponderosa typically gets enough snow in the winter for winter sports like winter hiking, cross-county skiing and snowshoeing. Since we’re sitting at an elevation of about 6,500 feet – a whole 2,500 feet higher than Springdale and the main entrance of Zion National Park – we often have snow in the winter even when Zion National Park’s main canyon doesn’t.

Our high-elevation location means you have access to trails guests of other properties don’t. Winter hiking to Observation Point, or snowshoeing to Cable Mountain, a beautiful hike through East Zion backcountry across Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort means you often have views like these all to yourself. Even Checkerboard Mesa on the east side of Zion is a gorgeous spot for a winter stroll.

Winter weather in Zion

Mild temperatures and a light dusting of snow are pretty common, although the occasional snowfall can leave Zion blanketed in snow. Daytime temperatures can be in the low 50s some days, but nighttime and morning temps are chilly and can dip into the teens. If you plan on visiting Zion in the winter, be vigilant in checking the weather before you come because the truth is, Zion winters are unpredictable and different year to year.
